{"id":1693,"date":"2020-11-14T00:27:56","date_gmt":"2020-11-14T00:27:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/travelcommunication.net\/?p=26589"},"modified":"2020-12-14T09:23:48","modified_gmt":"2020-12-14T09:23:48","slug":"a-lifeline-for-small-island-states-unwto-joins-imo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.travelindex.org\/media\/global-travel-news\/a-lifeline-for-small-island-states-unwto-joins-imo\/","title":{"rendered":"A Lifeline for Small Island States: UNWTO Joins IMO"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/travelcommunication.net\/more-news\/organizations\/international-organizations\/un-world-tourism-organization-news\/a-lifeline-for-small-island-states-unwto-joins-imo\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"A Lifeline for Small Island States UNWTO Joins IMO to Highlight Importance of Cruise Tourism-TRAVELINDEX\" src=\"https:\/\/travelcommunication.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/A-Lifeline-for-Small-Island-States-UNWTO-Joins-IMO-to-Highlight-Importance-of-Cruise-Tourism-TRAVELINDEX-500x262.jpg\" alt=\"A Lifeline for Small Island States: UNWTO Joins IMO\" width=\"500\" height=\"262\" style=\"max-width: 100%;height: auto\" \/><\/a>\n\t<\/div>\n<p class=\"p_brief\">London, United Kingdom, November 12, 2020 \/ TRAVELINDEX \/ In a joint statement issued today, the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) highlight the importance of the cruise sector for the world economy.<\/p>\n<p>According to\u00a0industry data,\u00a0the cruise sector\u00a0supports 1.2 million jobs and\u00a0contributes US$150 billion to the global economy every year.\u00a0Tourism is vitally important for Small Islands States, where it <strong>sustains millions of livelihoods<\/strong> and brings substantial socio-economic benefits.<\/p>\n<p>The two UN\u00a0agencies\u00a0also recognise\u00a0the efforts made by the industry, countries and international organizations to <strong>protect the safety, health and well-being of passengers<\/strong> and crew,\u00a0as well as\u00a0the health of the population of destination port States of cruise ships.\u00a0Since\u00a0cruise operations were suspended worldwide due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the industry has been reviewing and enhancing\u00a0its\u00a0protocols to identify ways to go further in protecting the health of passengers, crew and the general public.<\/p>\n<p>The joint statement invites\u00a0governments to\u00a0use the\u00a0<em>Guidance on the gradual and safe resumption of operations of cruise ships in the European Union in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic<\/em>\u00a0(<em>shared by IMO in Circular Letter No 4204\/Add.26<\/em>)\u00a0to facilitate the recovery of the sector\u00a0under safe conditions,\u00a0as well as\u00a0three framework documents (operator framework, passenger framework and seafarer framework)\u00a0developed by the United\u00a0Kingdom\u2019s\u00a0Chamber of Shipping together with\u00a0CLIA.<\/p>\n<p>IMO and UNWTO\u00a0emphasise that the resumption of cruise ship operations\u00a0will\u00a0also\u00a0benefit\u00a0the wider maritime community,\u00a0since passenger\u00a0ships participate in the automated mutual-assistance vessel rescue (AMVER) and are often requested by Rescue Coordination Centres to\u00a0offer assistance to\u00a0ships in distress at sea.<\/p>\n<p>IMO and\u00a0UNWTO\u00a0reiterate their\u00a0call\u00a0to\u00a0Governments to designate all seafarers and marine personnel as key workers and remove any barriers to crew changes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>London, United Kingdom, November 12, 2020 \/ TRAVELINDEX \/ In a joint statement issued today, the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) highlight the importance of the cruise sector for the world economy.
